Peptides and Inflammaging

Inflammaging: Can Peptides Support Healthier Aging?

Many people think of inflammation as something that happens after an injury or infection. In those situations, inflammation is helpful—it is part of the body’s normal healing response.

But inflammation can also remain mildly elevated for years without causing obvious symptoms. This chronic, low-grade inflammation that develops as we age is sometimes called inflammaging. Inflammaging may contribute to fatigue, loss of muscle, weight gain, insulin resistance, slower recovery, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and other age-related health concerns.

Peptide therapy is an emerging area of medicine that may help influence some of the biological pathways involved in this process.

What Causes Inflammaging?

Inflammaging is not caused by one single problem.

It usually develops from a combination of factors, including: • Increased abdominal or visceral fat • Insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar • Loss of muscle mass • Poor sleep or untreated sleep apnea • Chronic stress • Changes in the gut microbiome • Reduced intestinal-barrier health • Mitochondrial dysfunction • Environmental exposures • Smoking or excessive alcohol use • Chronic infections or inflammatory conditions

As these factors accumulate, the immune system may remain partially activated. This can create a cycle in which inflammation contributes to metabolic and cellular dysfunction, which then generates even more inflammation.

What Are Peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids—the building blocks of proteins. Your body naturally produces thousands of peptides that act as messengers between cells. They help regulate functions such as: • Metabolism and appetite • Blood-sugar control • Immune activity • Tissue repair • Muscle maintenance • Digestion • Sleep and recovery Some peptide medications have been extensively studied and approved by the FDA. Others remain experimental and have limited human research. Therefore, every peptide must be considered individually. How Might Peptides Help With Inflammaging? Peptides do not simply “turn off” inflammation.

Different peptides may influence different contributors to inflammaging. Supporting metabolic health Supporting mitochondrial function Regulating immune signaling Supporting gut and intestinal-barrier health Supporting tissue repair and recovery

Are Peptides Right for Everyone? No. Peptide therapy should not be selected based solely on symptoms, social-media claims, or the idea that a treatment is “natural.”

Before considering a peptide, a clinician should evaluate: • Your medical history and treatment goals • The underlying source of inflammation • Current medications and supplements • Cancer history or risk • Autoimmune conditions • Cardiovascular health • Liver and kidney function •

The quality of evidence for the proposed peptide

• Whether an FDA-approved treatment is available Many investigational peptides have not been adequately studied during pregnancy, breastfeeding, cancer treatment, or in people with significant autoimmune, liver, kidney, or cardiovascular disease.

Peptides Cannot Replace the Foundations of Healthy Aging Peptides may eventually become useful tools in longevity medicine, but they cannot compensate for untreated health risks.

The most evidence-based ways to reduce inflammaging include: • Building and preserving muscle through resistance training • Performing regular aerobic exercise • Reducing excess visceral fat • Improving blood-sugar and insulin regulation • Eating a fiber-rich, plant-forward diet • Getting adequate protein • Sleeping seven to nine hours when possible • Identifying and treating sleep apnea • Avoiding smoking • Limiting alcohol • Maintaining good dental and periodontal health • Managing blood pressure and cholesterol • Addressing chronic stress

Peptides, when appropriate, should support a comprehensive healthy-aging plan—not replace it. Understanding Safety FDA-approved peptide medications have been studied for specific medical conditions. Compounded and investigational peptides have not undergone the same FDA review for safety, effectiveness, or manufacturing quality. The FDA has raised concerns about several peptides commonly promoted online, including potential immune reactions, impurities, inconsistent product quality, and insufficient human safety information. Patients should never inject or consume products labeled “for research use only” or “not for human consumption.”

A Personalized Approach at ARA At ARA Integrative & Functional Medicine, we do not treat inflammaging with a one-size-fits-all protocol. We first look for the factors that may be increasing inflammation and accelerating biological aging. Based on these findings, we create an individualized plan that may include nutrition, exercise, weight optimization, sleep support, targeted supplements, medications, and carefully selected therapies.

Take the Next Step Toward Healthier Aging If you are experiencing fatigue, metabolic changes, slower recovery, declining strength, or other concerns related to aging, we can help identify the factors that may be contributing to chronic inflammation.
