Your Genes and Caffeine Consumption

Why can some people fall asleep like a baby after having caffeine in the evening while others will suffer from insomnia?  I get this question all the time and there is a VERY good reason. It comes from our GENETICS!

There are specific genotypic variants called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP's) that designate whether we are slow or normal metabolizers of caffeine. Studies have shown that if you are a slow metabolizer of caffeine your risk for a heart attack can go up by 36%! At ARA Integrative and Functional Medicine, we are doing an array of genetic testing that focuses on Nutrigenomics. This type of genetic testing enables us to detect these variants as well as over 100 additional food-related SNPs.
